About Asturias

This region was a predominantly Celtic land before the arrival of the Romans, but the main historical matter of pride for the local population is that it was the only part of the Iberian Peninsula which resisted the Moorish invasion, after having defeated the Muslim army at the battle of Covadonga, in the year 718; the Christian kingdom of Asturias was founded in the 8th century.

In Asturias, the distance between the coast and the interior can be described as a nice stroll where the woods still shade the rivers and where the sea and the mountain come together almost miraculously. Protected by a chain of mountains and bathed by the Cantabrian Sea Asturias is a little paradise with endless natural treasures and secret places to be discovered. Mountains, valleis, meadows, coasts and lakes form natural landscape of Asturias.

Natural paradise

Asturias  is known as the 'Spanish Switzerland ' or 'Green Spain' due to its lush countryside and high mountinous areas. In reality the landscape here varies enormously. Around 30% of the area consists of protected countryside. People in Asrturias are very  kind and generous, they will make the visitor feel right at home. They are always thankful for the visit, they put their best foot forwardand show an interest in helping the visitor to find his way around Asturias.

Cultural destination

Asturias has many pre-Romanesque history places, monumets, caves and granaries. Even once in the past was home to dinosaurs what we can learn in The Jurassic Museum of Asturias and Prehistoric Park of Teverga. We can visit here numerous museums and tourist centres which can satisfy even a mate appetite for discovering new places.

Exceptional taste of the food

The Principality of Asturias is a historic community with some signs of identity that have been maintained throughout the centuries, and one of them is food. The Asturian gastronomy is characterized by the variety of special products which are native to the region.

In this manner and as heir to tradition, the current Asturian cuisine probably thrives more than ever before, especially when it comes to being known beyond its own borders, thanks to the efforts of many hands, farmers, ranchers, and  above all, the cooks who contribute both traditional knowledge and the latest trendsof the market.

Asturias offers hundreds of possibilities for participating in outdoor activities:
